Message from the Chair

Jennifer Gibbins Durbin

It is my privilege to serve as the 24th Chair of the San Antonio Bar Foundation. I am proud of the accomplishments of the Foundation and the Bar’s service to the San Antonio community through educational programs and charitable gifts.

The Foundation’s activities include:

18th Annual Fun Run for Justice on November 21, 2009, at Sam’s Burger Joine (330 Grayson Street, San Antonio, TX).  This 4-mile family-fun event, starts at Sam’s Burger Joint, goes through Brackenridge part and back to Sam’s Burger Joint. Proceeds from the Fun Run benefit the Police Atheletic League (PAL) programs, which assist at-risk youth and future gifts of the Foundation.

2010 Peacemaker Awards Gala
Febrary 27, 2010, Grand Hyatt Hotel, downtown San Antonio.

Each year, the Foundation recognizes and awards those who have contributed to the cause of peace in our community. The 2009 Peacemaker Awards Honorees were:

2009 Peacemaker Award honoree is the San Antonio Food Bank for their outstanding and nationally recognized effort as a leader in the fight against hunger and improving our community through efficient programs and services.

2009 Corporate Community Service Award honoree is business leader Richard H. “Rick” Cavender for his efforts in promoting and teaching the value of community service to the youth of San Antonio through City Year San Antonio and other important community initiatives.

2009 Carolyn Thurmond Community Service Award honoree is attorney Thomas “Tommy” J. Smith. Mr. Smith encourages peace on a daily basis as a respected mediator and also as a mentor to young up-and-coming leaders in San Antonio through a monthly breakfast group.

2009 School Peer Mediation Award recipient is Encino Park Elementary School.  The school and its students will be recognized for their efforts in implementing and supporting peer mediation.

People’s Law School
Saturday, February 20, 2010, St. Mary’s University School of Law
People’s Law School is an annual (and sometimes twice annual) presentation by volunteer attorneys who provide, at no cost, legal and consumer information to the San Antonio community on a range of pertinent issues and developments.

On behalf of the entire Board of Trustees, we appreciate your support of the Foundation.
